Virtual production, demystified
How the green screen disappeared.
The green screen is disappearing. In its place: a wall of light showing a world that is already there.
For decades, actors performed against a flat expanse of green, imagining the world that would be painted in around them months later. Virtual production inverts the order. The world arrives first.
A live world behind the actor
Giant LED walls surround the stage, displaying a three-dimensional environment rendered in real time. Move the camera and the scene behind the actor shifts in correct perspective, because the wall knows exactly where the camera is. The background is alive, not composited after the fact.
Much of what we used to call “post” now happens on the stage, in the moment.
Light that belongs
The same real-time engines that drive video games now light the set itself. The glow of a rendered sunset falls on real skin; a passing window reflects in an actor’s eye. A director can change the angle of the sun between takes instead of between quarters.
