What we mean by “agentic”
Why it isn't a bigger model or a longer prompt.
An agent is not a louder model. It is a system handed a goal, a set of tools, and the latitude to choose its own next move; then made answerable for the result.
For two years the public conversation about machine intelligence has fixed on a single dial: scale. Bigger models, longer prompts, more parameters. It is the wrong dial. The leap that matters is not how much a model knows, but whether it is permitted to act.
The shape of agency
Give a model a goal instead of a question. Give it tools instead of a blank page. Give it the latitude to take a step, read what happened, and decide the next step for itself. Now you have something categorically different. Not a better answerer, but a worker.
The distinction is not cosmetic. A question has one good answer; a goal has a thousand paths to it, most of them wrong. An agent earns its keep precisely because it can walk a path it was never shown, recover from a misstep, and still arrive.
Most real work is not a question to answer. It is a process to run.
Why we build this way
A system that explains beautifully and does nothing is a pamphlet. We are not in the pamphlet business. The agents we build reconcile the ledger, clear the queue, file the document, and then tell you, plainly, what they did and why.
Accountability is the other half. Latitude without a record is recklessness. Every action an agent takes is a real effect in the world, logged and legible, so that trust is earned in the open rather than assumed in the dark.
Acting and self-checking will always beat explaining.
